A wide variety of subjects and styles, locations and situations—these are the photos I took this year that deserve honorable mention but wouldn’t fit in my wedding and portraiture sets.

Change, like sunshine, can be a friend or a foe, a blessing or a curse, a dawn or a dusk.” (William Arthur Ward)

It’s funny how us Southern Californians (who live in what is technically a desert) welcome the winter rain like how people everywhere else welcome the summer sun.

Last weekend Matt & I had the brilliant luck and unparalleled pleasure of photographing Chrys & Rick’s wedding in the Dominican Republic. Destination weddings are decidedly more difficult than local ones, but I can’t even begin to describe how awesome of a time we had. Chrys’ & Rick’s families were open and welcoming, and their friends are all so impossibly cool and friendly that I’ve half a mind to move to Ohio, D.C., or NY myself just to find more people just like them!

I’m hard at work editing through the 4000+ images we shot and I’ll be in Napa Valley this weekend for another destie, but for now here’s a little sampling of our Memorial Day weekend in the Republica Dominica:

Sugarcane fields

Warm tropical storms at the resort

Workin’ hard!

More photos to come!

It's a rare rainy day here, luckily you can still do things:

Last night I took some shots of smoke. Anyone can do this with a remote strobe (or other bright light source), and a stick of incense; set the strobe behind and a little below the smoke, make sure it's dark and you have a black background if possible (though not imperative, I shot these w/out a black sheet or anything), put your camera on a tripod and fire away!

Tips:

Put your settings on a high F-stop, and if possible, a high shutter speed and low ISO.

Obviously your camera will have trouble focusing in the dark, I recommend focusing and THEN turning out the lights, or (what I did) focus on the glowing tip of the incense and move the frame upward a little.

Experiment! I took over 400 shots in about an hour, and wound up with only 3-5 favorites:

This is actually my desktop now. It reminds me of the incredible graphics in the iTunes commercials.

Today I received a notice from the OC Fair indicating that all three of my photo entries were accepted for display. Now I have to print, frame, and re-submit them for judging. This is a new system for the fair and I like it a lot more; before, you had to print, frame, and submit and then if your piece wasn't chosen for display you wasted all that time and money printing and framing!

Anyway. One of the works I am very doubtful will win anything, but the other two may have a shot at a ribbon, depending on the judges' style.

Personally I don't think any of my three submissions top the photo for which I won 1st place last year. I've created a magnum opus at the beginning of my career...it's all downhill from here on out :\
